How can you become a fashion designer or model?

I'm only in 6th grade, but I have a knack for fashion. I've always wanted to be a fashion designer or model, and now's the time to make my dream come true. Please tell everything you know.

You CAN start preparing to be a model right now. Anyone who tells you differently knows not what they are talkinga bout. Clueless at best. I am guessing that you must be around the age of 11. So you can start taking care of your skin, hair, your body. Practice posing in the mirror. Modeling isn't all about being pretty. Some of the ugliest girls are very successful models and you know why because they know how to transform. How tall are you? How is your weight? Are you real, real thin? Are you atleast 5'7 for your age. Models are usually 5'8- 6 foot with some exceptions but agencies will take a girl your age who is 5'7 because she is still growing in some agencies opinions. What everyone tells you and what an agent might tell you are two totally different things my dear. If you are 5'2 right now, you might not be able to become a model. If you can get to the height of atleast 5'6 by the time you are 13 you will have a good chance, and with the right look. Whatever that is supposed to mean. Try learning all the different modeling agencies, the models and designers. What are the fashion capitals? Where do you live? Are you willing to travel? You can go to models.com for information on agencies in your city. But if you aren't in a big City you will eventually have to either live in a model house in that city and you do have to pay. I will warn you not to think you are going ot be a supermodel over night. You might not even become one at all. But you might become a supermodel at the same time. Its a real, real tough industry and it can either make you or break you. Seriously...Watch out for scams because there are a lot of scams out here waiting to prey on young girls like you so whatever you do you gotta take your parent with you. Also, remember if any agent tells you to pay or get naked RUN, RUN, RUN!!! As far as models.com, I do not recommend you joining the forums and speaking with any of the stage moms and other idoits. Don't post any pics up there either. I have NEVER in my life posted a picture up there because I don't need their approval as a source for me beginning my career like those other folks do. Trust, their UGLY daughters can say what they want about someone but when someone talks about their UGLY daughter it is a different story. So, I suggest you just go on there and search and not interact with those jobless sad people lol. This is for fashion modeling

You can actually start sending out to an agency once you hit 13 years old.

Okay... as for Fashion Design. You need to start drawing. Study the fashion magazines as well. Learn about Croquis, the fashion figure, whats in whats not. I recommend Fashion Sketchbook by Bina Abling and 9 Heads. There are a ton of fashioin books out here but those two ar eth eones that helped me. I have a couple of more fashion books as well but those two are the best. You can also learn to sew meanwhile. Try to find the different fashion schools F.I.T. Fashion Institute of Technology. Cheap. I take a course there now. I finished college in Business Management with a Bachelors Degree so now I am just focusing on my career. I used to go to Parsons School of Design but they are crazy expensive. If you can afford it. GO!! I love that school. Both are in New York City. You can also try FIDM in California. This is when you get older. For now, try to find different afterschool programs that are dedicated to drawing. You can also learn by yourself. A lot of designers were self taught and did not go to school. A lot of them did go to school. Its about how good you are and not where you learned and developed your skill. You are only in the 6th grade so if I were you I will just focus on learning how to draw fashion figures and clothing. I would also try a little bit of sewing but not right now. Study the magazines. You can prepare to go to a Fashion High School. I just know of Fashion Industries High School in New York City. Just focus on drawing for now and learning who the different designers are, where they went to school etc... Knowledge is power and its very impressive. Do the same thing for modeling as far as learning about the different agencies and the different models and how they got started. Some of them went from rags to riches. Some of these stories of Fashion Designers and Models are very inspirational. Its very funny how you see so many girls on America's Next Top Model talking about they want to be a Model and they know NOTHING about the Fashion Modeling Industry. They don't know any of the designers, barely any of the models. Its really sad how these girls have a distored view of the modeling industry.

Who knows, if you ever become a famous model you can just use your status to have your own clothing line. I mean, I honestly don't believe its being a REAL fashion designer but at the same time you are still living out your dreams and you will be able to model your own clothing. Something I wanted to do way back when. Now I am just focusing on designing.

P.S. When and if you become a model watch out for all of the pressure. There is a lot of drugs and sex and all kinds of things in this industry and its a dog eat dog industry. It can eat you up and spit you out, keep on moving like you never existed. There is a lot of back stabbing. This is for Fashion Designing too. So I just wanted you to be aware so that if anyone pressures you to do anything you are smart enough not to. No matter what. No matter what anyone promises you.

Best Wishes and Good Luck!!

Yes, you are young, but that's good, it gives you plenty of time to learn some of the skills you need. First, models only wear clothes, designers are the ones who get to make the clothes and have fun with fabric and clothes. You have plenty of time to make your dreams come true, and you still have time to be a kid. Most established designers didn't start their businesses until they were in their twenties MINIMUM, most are in their 30's. There no rules that says you have to have your first line in stores by the time your sixteen or you'll never be a designer, that's simply false. some skills needed to be a real designer are only taught in college because they are so difficult to learn if the student is too young.

There are things you can do to begin your journey now. Begin your journey by learning to make clothes. You don't need to plunge in by designing evening gowns from scratch, just customize store bought clothes and make simple items such as t-shirts, skirts, shorts, etc. from patterns that they sell at the fabric stores. A simple pattern worked in high quality fabric will give you something interesting to wear and if you add details or embellishments you can also showcase your creativity. Sewing is something many designers begin at a young age and it's a useful skill no matter what you become when you are grown up. I began hand sewing at six and I was allowed to use the machine at nine. By grade nine I sewed about half of my school clothes. As you get better at sewing and making clothes expand your skills and challenge yourself. Try making a coat, or maybe a grad dress. Sew things for friends and family and if anyone asks, advertise yourself proudly. Some high schools have fashion design and sewing programs. At the least, try and take several art and sewing classes in high school. Work with your guidance department and learn everything you can about design schools. They will teach you how to take your sewing ability and raw creative potential and turn it into real fashion designs skills. They will also teach pattern making, design by draping, some basics of fashion business and many things that are an important part of a design business that aren't featured on The Hills or other fashion based reality shows on TV. When you get a degree from one of these schools, at the correct age, then the entire fashion world is open to you.

You can't get too much into the business until you are older, rules and regulations prevent children under 18 from owning big businesses. But you can have a small cottage business selling to family and friends, until you are older. Don't be in too much of a rush, the foundation of skills you build now will only make you a better designer as you get older. You have whole life ahead to make your dreams come true.

If you want to be a designer, start designing now! It's never too early to start. I wanted to design jewelry when I was younger and never pursued it, and now that I'm 21 and trying to establish a jewelry business, I really wish I started when I was younger. Work on some ideas, see if your school can help you with maybe working with a designer/clothing company/etc. for a day, take pictures of everything you make, or every unique outfit that you put together to use as a design/styling portfolio someday. When you're older, look into a fashion school. FIT and FIDM are the big schools, but there's plenty others. Take art classes; they help. Again, you're never too young to start.

Well, you can start preparing to be a designer, but you can't to be a model. To be a model, either you have the right height, body type and facial features or you don't. Nothing you can do will change that.

For designing, see if there are any fabric stores in your area offering sewing classes. I started taking sewing classes at 12 and made a lot of my own clothing in high school. Get a sewing machine and practice, practice, practice. Start making your own clothes, then make clothes for your friends. If people like them, then approach local clothing stores to see if they will take any of your pieces on consignment - it means you don't get paid unless the clothes sell, or you have to take them back

Then start looking into fashion schools like FIT and Parsons now to see what their admissions requirements are so you can start preparing now. You'll know what sort of GPA you need, which elective classes you need to take, what sort of portfolio or clothing samples you need to submit, etc and have enough time to perfect it. You'll be in a better position than a 17 year old who wants to go and has to scramble to put together a portfolio without having any experience designing

I'm not really a model but many people in my school say's that i am very fashionable and i do fashion art design.... to be a model look up a talent agency at you local area and may have to ask you're parents......i'm planning on doing dance/choreography and i have sign up a talent agency after i get out of school ... i'm a 12th grade....when you get to high school in the future you do alot before you ever do modeling or fashion designing ...you may have yo go to college because is hard to look up jobs for fashion design that happen to me before but yess try to do that ....because is maybe the right to do it in you future.
